The IRS has extended the Free File program through 2029, alongside private tax software companies!

The IRS has announced the extension of its Free File program until 2029, maintaining its collaboration with a group of private tax software companies. This allows Americans to file their federal taxes for free.

Free File has processed over 2.9 million returns this tax season, marking a 7.3% increase compared to the same period last year, according to IRS data. The program remains available until the federal tax extension deadline of October 15th. You can use it if your adjusted gross income is $79,000 or less, an increase from $73,000 in 2022. For 2024, partners participating in IRS Free File are:

  • 1040Now
  • Drake (1040.com)
  • ezTaxReturn.com
  • FileYourTaxes.com
  • On-Line Taxes
  • TaxAct
  • TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA)
  • TaxSlayer

“Free File has been an important partner with the IRS for more than two decades and helped tens of millions of taxpayers. This extension will continue that relationship into the future. This multi-year agreement will also provide certainty for private-sector partners to help with their future Free File planning”, said Ken Corbin, chief of IRS Taxpayer Services.

The extension announcement follows the recent release of data for the IRS’s Direct File pilot program, which offered a free filing option directly with the IRS for certain taxpayers in 12 states. During this tax season, 140,803 taxpayers successfully filed returns using Direct File, saving an estimated $5.6 million in federal tax preparation fees. The IRS plans to make a decision on the future of the program later this spring after considering feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, according to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel.
